Select good materials that are safe and later can be reused or repurposed. Using good materials will lead to increased recyclability of all installed floors, keeping waste from landfills.
Do not pose a risk to the environmental and human health alternative.
Tarkett began using a new generation of phthalate plasticizer in the production of its homogeneous vinyl, vinyl composition tile, vinyl enhanced tile, solid vinyl tile (Cortina Grande) flooring and vinyl and rubber wall base in 2011. We will continue to look for alternative plasticizers that are natural, renewable or environmentally friendly in the production of all of our vinyl flooring to ensure safe and healthier environments. Tarkett world wide announced in September 2013 the implementation of phthalate free technology in Europe.
Rapidly Renewable Raw Materials
Tarkett incorporates rapidly renewable and natural products and by-products in many of our formulations such as linseed oil, walnut shells, cork, and rosin.
Most Tarkett products contain pre-consumer recycled content. Post-consumer content is found in many North American products. This post-consumer recycled content may come from used floors recycled into new VCT or windshield glass used in Azterra, Color Essence and Cortina Grande.
All Tarkett facilities in North America and Western Europe have earned the ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certification. In order to receive ISO 14001 certification, the environmental management system (EMS) at each manufacturing site must undergo a comprehensive, on-site audit to determine whether it meets the ISO 14001 requirements. Receiving these certifications provides assurance to our employees and clients, as well as the community and regulatory agencies, of Tarkett’s commitment to reducing our environmental impact, to continually improving our systems and to reaching our goals of sustainability.
All of our plants have reduced energy consumption by as much as 20% through various strategies, such as the use of T5 fluorescent bulbs in 40% of our production areas and “soft-starts” on 35% of our equipment.
Tarkett is also implementing closed industrial water circuits in order to use 80% recycled water. The importance of measurement.
At Tarkett, we use Environmental Performance Indicators to measure and evaluate the success of our environmental systems. We call these forms of measurement Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), which show how much water and energy are used to make a square meter or linear foot of our products as well as how much waste per square meter we generate. A valuable tool in helping us measure our continual improvement, KPI’s will help us reach our goals of reducing water, energy & waste.
|Design solutions ensuring health and well-being on people in spaces.
- Most Tarkett commercial products are FloorScore certified for high-quality IAQ. Most Tarkett products have TVOC emissions of 100 ug/m3 or less, which is 2 times better than the most stringent industry standard, and we intend to reduce the emissions of all Tarkett commercial products sold in North America to 10 micrograms (or less) per cubic meter. This system (installation, product and maintenance) will not act as a trigger for asthma & allergies.
- Design safe floors that are eco effective to install and maintain. Tarkett floors require fewer chemicals for maintenance, which improves indoor air quality and reduces the amount of chemicals to impact the waste stream.
- Design Aesthetic: Productivity increases in happy spaces.
- Design safe floors. Rubber, linoleum and vinyl flooring provides a resilient surface that offers shock absorption, softer acoustics and a warmer surface than other resilient flooring options. Tarkett continually searches out design solutions that provide new functionality. Tarkett’s Research and Development team is already working on design solutions with new functional attributes.
Tarkett manufacturers products in a closed-loop system. Very little is wasted or sent to landfill, but instead is reused or repurposed in the manufacturing process.
When material cannot be recycled back into Tarkett products, we partner with recycling companies to find a future use for all our material. For example, unrecyclable rubber becomes playground mulch and linoleum becomes compost. The goal for each of our plans is zero landfill; in our processes we reuse materials as much as possible or recycle externally as an alternate solution.
Our flooring technology allows us to reuse, or redistribute for other use, nearly all of our pre-consumer flooring and tread scrap. Raw-material excess, scrap and off-spec product is currently captured and reused in the manufacturing process or repurposed for other uses. Not, that same capability also allows us to reuse or repurpose uninstalled job site remnants. And, post-consumer or installed Vinyl Composition Tile is eligible for the ReStart Program, too!
